A Step into the Boston Massacre: 5th grade:
Overview: In this lesson, the students will learn about the Boston Massacre and how this event led to the American Revolution. The students will understand that when governments are unjust, sometimes people revolt. The students will compare and contrast the two sides of the American colonists in the 1770’s, “Colonists Should Fight the British for Independence” versus “Colonists Should Not Fight the British for Independence.” In addition, the students will create a web video on one event that led to the American Revolution. This lesson is designed to integrate technology, such as WeVideo, with social studies.

Overview: In this unit, the students will learn about the economic life and labor systems during colonial times in North America. The students will learn about the inequalities individuals faced during that time period, and the inequalities that we face today. The big idea is that the students will understand that discrimination is when people are treated differently based on some characteristic.

A Look Inside the Reconstruction Era: 5th grade:
Overview: This unit will introduce students to the period of 1865-1877 known as the Reconstruction Era. Students will learn that after the Civil War, Reconstruction failed to transform the South's wealth and social system. Students will discover by research how legislation brought about a new change primarily for African Americans.
